Colored contact lenses are a fashion product in the eyes of many customers, but legally and medically they are medical devices. Retailers who treat them that way protect their customers, avoid regulatory trouble and build long-term trust.
Sell only registered, authentic products
Buy from the brand or its authorised distributors, and keep the registration documents for every product you sell. Counterfeit and unregistered lenses are a real problem in many markets: they may be made without quality control, and selling them can expose a store to fines and reputational damage.
Store lenses correctly
- Keep stock in a clean, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat.
- Rotate stock so that older lots are sold first, and never sell a box past its expiry date.
- Do not open, split or repackage boxes — sealed packaging is part of the product’s safety.
Keep traceability
Record the lot numbers you receive and, where possible, which lot went to which customer. If a supplier ever needs to recall a batch, you will be able to act quickly and contact the right people.
Give customers the right advice
Your staff are often the last point of contact before a customer puts a lens on. A few consistent messages make a big difference:
- Encourage customers — especially first-time wearers — to consult an eye care professional before use.
- Explain the replacement schedule (monthly, 3-month or 6-month) and that lenses should not be worn beyond it.
- Remind customers never to share lenses, and to follow the cleaning and storage instructions on the pack.
- Advise them to remove the lenses and seek professional advice if they feel discomfort, redness or changes in vision.
Follow local rules on how lenses are sold
Rules differ between countries. In some markets decorative lenses may only be sold with a prescription or through licensed optical outlets; in others online sales are restricted. Check the requirements in each market you serve and train your team on them.
Market responsibly
Beautiful imagery sells lenses, but avoid medical claims and make sure promotions, influencer content and social media posts comply with local advertising rules for medical devices.
Responsible selling isn’t a cost — it’s what turns a one-time buyer into a loyal customer.
